The History of Lumpers Bar
Back To The Start - 1845!
During the Great Hunger in Ireland, the Lumper potato was the dominant variety cultivated by farmers, prized for its affordability, large size, and resilience in poor, unmanured soil. Its widespread use stemmed from the desperate need to maximize food production in difficult agricultural conditions.
However this reliance proved catastrophic when the blight, a fungal disease that thrived in the damp conditions of late August 1845 and swept through the crops, rendering the Lumper potatoes uniquely vulnerable. The devastation marked the beginning of a famine that would have profound and lasting effects on Ireland.
Adding a historical layer to this narrative, the premises that now houses the Lumpers Pub was once the location of a seed potato business operated by a dealer known locally as Lumper McArdle. This connection to the past serves as a poignant reminder of the region’s agricultural heritage and the tragic events tied to it.
